February 4th, Ahavas Shalom

The Israelite academy, in co-operation with Ahavas Shalom and Kulanu, wishes to announce a celebration of Black History Month giving tribute to and saluting “Jews of Color!” Join us for the opening week of February 4th for a unity Shabbat at Ahavas Shalom located at 145 Broadway Newark New Jersey. Festivities include:

*Shabbat services

*Kiddush/Oneg

*A panel discussion

*Havdalah

The evening activities includes:

*Opening night of the Jews of Color exhibit @ the Jewish Museum of Newark *Capping off the evening will be the inaugural event of the “Black Jewish Film Festival!”

9:30 am — Preliminary Prayers and P’Sukei D’Zimra
10 am — Shacharit, followed by the Torah Service, Musaf, and Kiddush

Join us for the all-day Unity Shabbat celebration, starting with Shabbat Morning Services beginning at 9:30 am.  

Following services, we will go downstairs for a Kiddush Lunch and an open discussion with Rabbis Capers Funnye, Baruch A. Yehuda, Sholomo Ben Levy, Hezekiah Yehudah, and Yisrael Yushurun Levy, and members of four Israelite synagogues.  

At the end of Shabbat, we will do Havdalah and go upstairs for the grand opening of the Jewish Museum of New Jersey’s new exhibit, “Jews of Color.”  

Part of the program will be a provocative open public forum and discussion.   

The Jewish Museum of New Jersey will host a series of programs for Black History Month.  See below.    

All attendees should be vaccinated or have proof of a negative Covid test within the preceding 48 hours.  Face masks will be required at all times in the synagogue.
