In Memory of Mother Tamar Minott

Obituary of Mother Tamar Minott-Cherry

The early house of our beloved Mildred Westbrook Minott-Cherry (Tamar Yehudah) ended on Monday, February 15, 2021, at Kenansville Health and Rehabilitation Center in Kenansville, North Carolina. Mother Minott was born on September 20, 1922, to the late Fred and Elizabeth Murphy Westbrook. She was reared in a loving family of five siblings. Four siblings, Mable, Fred, Ruth and Bernice, preceded her in death. She was the last of her generation.

Mother Mildred received her education from the Duplin County Public School System. In 1937, she ventured to New York to live with her aunt and began her career. She worked at Kings’ County Hospital for over 21 years as a nursing assistant.

Mother Minott was joined in holy matrimony to the late Elworth Minott (Elder Gavriel Yehudah) until his passing. She and her husband, as members of the Commandment Keepers Congregation, brought Chief Rabbi Levi B. Levy to Judaism. She was one of the founding members of Beth Shalom E.H. Congregation in Brooklyn, New York.

Late in life, she married Robert Cherry until his demise on January 13, 1999. Both of her marriages were blessed with many years of love and happiness. Even though she did not have any children of her own, she assisted in raising and caring for her late nephew, Asa Thompson and niece, Annie L. Thompson (Shirley) and many others.

In 1980, she and her husband, Robert, returned to her roots in Rose Hill, North Carolina and enjoyed living near her family and friends. She enjoyed attending family gatherings, talking on the phone, attending functions with her sisters, Bernice and Ruth and hearing about her nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

She also enjoyed attending functions at St. Phillip AME Church in Rose Hill, North Carolina.

To her family, she was dependable, strong-willed, supportive and caring. She was a well-loved aunt, cousin and friend. She loved everybody and never met a stranger.

We thank God for allowing us to share her love and humbleness for so many years. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She has touched our lives in so many ways that we feel a very deep loss, but we humbly submit to God’s will.

Left to cherish her precious memories are her special niece, Anni Louise Thompson (Shirley) of Brooklyn, New York, the Barnes and Chaten Family; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews that will miss her dearly.
