In Memory of Rabbi Yehoshua Melchizadek Lewi

Rabbi Yehoshua Melchizadek Ben Lewi was a faithful servant of the Most High God. He was president of the New York Chapter of the International Israelite Board of Rabbis. For over twenty years, he served as a teacher with the New York Board of Education. After graduating from the Israelite Academy, he was ordained at Beth Shalom Bnai Zaken Ethiopian Hebrew Congregation in Chicago and spent the rest of his life as a dynamic and inspiring leader. He was a lion in the battle for truth, righteousness, and justice.

As a young man he was a gifted athlete who was scouted by the New York Jets. Yehoshua discovered Judaism as a member of Commandment Keepers Congregation in Harlem. He then joined Beth Shalom E.H. congregation in Brooklyn when he became a proselyte of Chief Rabbi Levi Ben Levy. Over the years he served many Israelite congregations. He assisted Rabbi Yehoshua Yahonatan and Cohen Natanya HaLevi in Mt Vernon, New York and Rabbi Eliyah Yehudah in Queens, New York. He spent his final years in Ghana, West Africa. Rabbi Yehoshua Melchizadek Ben Lewi was loved by many and will be missed by all. A memorial service will be held in the United States at an appropriate time.

Those who knew Rabbi Yehoshua are invited to share their memories and send condolences on this page.
